Runner of the Year

Jill Krebs, South Carroll, Soph.: Her late-season charge blew everyone away. After spending most of the season as the team's No. 2 runner behind Carrie Braun, Krebs beat her at the CMC meet by 79 seconds while finishing third. Krebs then went on to become the team's top runner while winning the county meet, taking third in the region and fourth in the state. "The way she came on all at once, that surprised me more than anything. I expected it sooner or later, but not with that explosiveness," said South Carroll coach Rob Pennington.

First team at a glance

Carrie Braun, South Carroll, Jr.: She turned in another string of good performances for the Cavaliers. Braun finished fourth in the county, seventh in the CMC, ninth in the region and 22nd at the state meet. Pennington said even though she may have peaked a bit early and been overshadowed by Krebs' heroics, she still is one of the county's best.

Sarah Brumfitt, Westminster, Fresh.: Coach Jim Shank called Brumfitt the fifth-ranked Owls' most consistent runner. And the numbers back up his words. Brumfitt took second in the county, 19th in the CMC, ninth in the region and 22nd at the state meet. She led the team in each of these races and should have a bright future.

Jessica Detrow, Westminster, Soph.: She ran strong all season for the Owls as part of their pack. Detrow helped the team to an easy victory at the county championships with her fifth-place finish. She added to that with an eighth-place finish at the CMC meet plus 18th at the region and 41st in the state meet.

Dawn Harner, Francis Scott Key, Soph.: She got better as the season went along. By the time of the MVAL meet, she was the team's clear No. 1 runner and finished seventh there. Harner also took third in the county and then won the region and finished a team-best 12th at last weekend's state meet.

Ali Jones, Francis Scott Key, Sr.: Continuing the way she has been throughout her career, Jones ran consistently for the Eagles all season. She finished second in the region meet, helping Key win it by making a late charge and passing two runners. Jones also took seventh in the county meet.

Heidi Metzger, Westminster, Sr.: Metzger was another runner who posted a series of good performances for the Owls. She started her good postseason run by taking 12th at the CMC meet. Metzger followed that with a sixth-place finish at the county meet, 15th in the region and 30th at the state.
