GLENELG HIGH School students are a talented bunch. Four seniors at the school are finalists in the Maryland Distinguished Scholar Program, giving them a chance to get a four-year scholarship at a Maryland college or university. Matt Ashmore, John Habert, Frederick Kramer and Chris Seymour, also a finalist in the instrumental music category, were selected as finalists.

Semifinalists include Lauren Brown, Aaron Fallon, Michaelean Ferguson, Brendan Gallagher, Suzanne Mundy, Michele Renehan and Patrick Tvarkunas. Twenty-four seniors won honorable mention for their academic prowess. In the talent category, honorable mention goes to James Hill III, in vocal music; Sara Kwolek in visual arts; and Sabrina Paylor in dance.

Glenelg High School senior Reginald Brown is a commended participant in the 1996 National Achievement Scholarship Program of Outstanding Negro Students, placing him in the top 5 percent of students who requested consideration in this program.

Redistricting concerns

Some western Howard County residents who thought they were immune from school redistricting were surprised to discover that students who live in Dayton and some who live in Glenelg would attend the new River Hill High School.

Neighbors are meeting informally to collect information and discuss this important issue under the banner of the 5-year-old group Advocates for Our Kids (AOK). If you'd like to join the discussions, call Bobbin Kreider at 531-5453.
