Game faces

November 16, 1995|By John Dorsey

For several years John Weiss, a professor of art at the University of Delaware, has traveled the country photographing baseball players -- both established stars and younger players. His photos have been gathered in a book, "The Face of Baseball," and 40 of the works from the book are included in an exhibit at the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Baseball Center. Among the players pictured are the three Ripkens -- Cal Sr. and Jr. and Bill -- and Orioles Mike Flanagan, Ken Singleton and Dennis Martinez. Wilfrid Sheed, who contributed an essay to the book, writes that Weiss "could wring a smile out of Sad Sam Jones, or a tear from Laughing Larry Doyle, or their modern counterparts."

At the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Baseball Center, 216 Emory St., through Dec. 31. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week. Call (410) 727-1539.
