Alcibiades Cortez, who broke his right leg and went into shock after a spill at Laurel Park on Sunday, is expected to be released from the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center by the end of the week.

Amy Cortez, the rider's wife, said yesterday that surgery to place a support rod into the compound fracture of her husband's lower right leg was successful.

"He is expected to be released within three or four days, or as soon as he can begin early therapy," she said.
