A fast-spreading fire destroyed an Elkridge home Friday afternoon, but its owner, who was working in the garden when the fire broke out, was not injured, Howard County fire officials said.

Madeline Mersinger, 88, owner of the two-story home in the 4800 block of Wharff Lane near the Baltimore County line, called firefighters from a neighbor's home.

The fire caused a $200,000 loss, including a Chevrolet parked in a carport, officials said. The state fire marshal's office is investigating the cause, officials said.

The fire began shortly after noon Friday, while Ms. Mersinger was in the garden, said Lt. Michael Baker, a spokesman for the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue. "When she opened the door to go into the house, she was met by a wall of smoke," Lieutenant Baker said.

Ms. Mersinger called firefighters from a neighbor's home by 12:30 p.m. Firefighters from Howard and Baltimore counties put out the fire by about 3 p.m., Lieutenant Baker said.

Ms. Mersinger is staying at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Convent.
