American Education Week celebrated locally

EDUCATION NOTES

American Education Week will be observed this week. This year's theme is "Good Schools are a Great Investment."

Here is the schedule of visits and events to be held at each school.

Central

* The Carroll County Career and Technology Center will be open to visitors from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and noon to 2 p.m. tomorrow through Thursday. An event for families and siblings to participate in hands-on learning activities will be Friday. Vocational Industrial Clubs of America is sponsoring this event.

* Carroll Spring School will welcome visitors tomorrow through Friday during school hours. The school is at 495 S. Center St., Westminster. Information: 751-3620.

* The Gateway School will be open to visitors from 8:50 a.m. to 2:10 p.m. tomorrow through Friday . The school is at Gateway West, Building 1135 Business Parkway South, Westminster. Information: 751-3691.

* Charles Carroll Elementary School will be open to visitors from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. or 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow, for those whose last name begin with A-L. Students with last names beginning with M-Z, may visit from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday. Other events include a book fair all week and a family reading night at 7:15 p.m.

The school is at 3719 Littlestown Pike, Westminster. Information: 751-3211.

* East Middle School visits for parents are tomorrow through Friday, and grandparent visits are Wednesday. Other events include honor roll receptions by grade Wednesday and a dance to publicize SHOUT from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday.

* Friendship Valley Elementary School will be open to visitors for students with last names beginning with A-L Tuesday and for students whose last names begin with M-Z on Thursday. The school is at 110 Gist Road, Westminster. Information: 751-3650.

* Sandymount Elementary School will have visits for grade one tomorrow, grades two and three on Tuesday, morning and afternoon kindergarten students whoses last names begin with A-L Wednesday and students with last names M-Z Thursday.

Students in grades one through five whose last names begin with A-L meet from 9:30 a.m. to noon and students whose last names begin with M-Z meet from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Friday, as part of the school spirit program, will be Read My Sweat Shirt Day.

* Robert Moton Elementary School will have visits for students whose last names begin with A-H on Monday, I-P on Tuesday and Q-Z on Wednesday. Other events will be posted at the information table of the school's foyer. The school is at 1413 Washington Road, Westminster. Information: 751-3610.

* West Middle School will be open for visitors Monday through Wednesday. The school is at 60 Monroe St., Westminster. Information: 751-3661.

* Westminster Elementary School will welcome visitors for kindergarten and first grade on Monday; second and third grades on Tuesday; and fourth and fifth graders on Wednesday. The school is at 811 Uniontown Road, Westminster.

* Westminster High School will have visits from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday. Other events include "Why Teach Day" on Monday. Teachers are encouraged to explain to classes the reason they chose teaching as a profession and why they like teaching.

Tuesday is Faculty Alma Mater Day. Faculty members are encouraged to wear or display something that identifies their undergraduate or graduate alma mater.

Wednesday is Faculty Recognition Day and apples will be distributed in recognition of the faculty.

Thursday will be Appreciation Day. "Candygrams" will be exchanged among faculty members. Proceeds will benefit the Faculty Scholarship Fund.

Friday is Shadow and Student Cadet Day. Members of Future Educators of America will shadow and assist faculty members. All teachers are encouraged to plan lessons in which students can take leadership roles.

Each day of the week, students who excel in certain subject areas will be recognized through a morning announcement.

* William Winchester Elementary School will have visits for students in grade one Monday, grade two Thursday and grades three and four Tuesday. Kindergarten and grade five visits are Friday.

All visits will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

Other events include a tea and talk featuring "Know the Learner," spelling program at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and and 9:45 a.m. Thursday. Also on Thursday, a cultural program, "The Harp -- The Instrument from Heaven," will be given by the Baltimore Music Club.

North

* Hampstead Elementary School will have visits from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday.

An overview of the ILA program will take place at 7 p.m. tomorrow. On Tuesday, parents will have an opportunity to ask questions and address concerns at 9:15 a.m.
