Boston Red Sox: Agreed to terms with P Brent Knackert, P Todd Bussa and 2B Ramon Caraballo on minor-league contracts.

Chicago White Sox: Re-signed C Ron Karkovice to a two-year contract.

Houston Astros: Reached agreement to remain in Houston for the 1996 season. Named Gerry Hunsicker general manager and Fred Nelson assistant to the general manager. Named Dan O'Brien director of scouting and player development. Announced the resignation of pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre. Reassigned first base coach and outfield coach Jesse Barfield to coach Double-A Jackson.

New York Mets: Announced that bench coach Bobby Wine, third base coach Mike Cubbage, first base coach Frank Howard, hitting instructor Tom McCraw and pitching coach Greg Pavlick will all return for the 1996 season.

New York Yankees: Announced that 1B Don Mattingly and 3B Wade Boggs filed for free agency. Announced the promotions of Jorge Oquendo to area scout for Puerto Rico and Joe Caro to assistant director of scouting. Named Scott Pleis Midwest area scout.

Pittsburgh Pirates: Re-signed IF Jeff King to a two-year contract.

St. Louis Cardinals: Announced that bullpen coach Mark DeJohn, bench coach Ron Hassey, hitting coach George Hendrick, first base coach Dave McKay and third base coach Tommie Reynolds have been added to the staff for 1996. Announced that Red Schoendienst will serve as a special assistant to the general manager and Bob Gibson will remain with the team as a special instructor.

San Diego Padres: Re-signed 3B Ken Caminiti to a two-year contract. Announced P Fernando Valenzuela filed for free agency.

San Francisco Giants: Reached a one-year agreement with IF Steve Scarsone.

Texas Rangers: Announced P Danny Darwin and P Jeff Russell filed for free agency.

Basketball

NBA: Suspended Indiana Pacers coach Larry Brown for one game and fined him $10,000 for verbally assaulting referees and refusing to leave the court during Thursday night's game at New York. Fined the Pacers an additional $50,000 for Brown's actions.

Orlando Magic: Placed F Jeff Turner on the injured list with a knee injury. Signed F-C Joe Wolf.

College

Big South Conference: Named UMBC freshman Lisa Cline (Northern-Calvert) Rookie of the Year and to the All-Conference first team in volleyball.

Western Maryland: Named Anne Glaeser Hubach (Towson) Class of 83, volleyball; Robert E. Bricker, Class of 42, football, E. Carter Baum, Class of 55, women's basketball; LuMar Myers Slocum, Class of 39, field hockey; J. William Kern Sr. (Southern), Class of 80, wrestling to the Sports Hall of Fame.

Football

NFL: Fined Jacksonville Jaguars LB Keith Goganious $4,000 for unsportsmanlike actions in a game Oct. 29.
