Allen House, county's new senior center, is set for grand opening

November 09, 1995|By Sally Buckler | Sally Buckler,SPECIAL TO THE SUN

HAVE YOU heard about the Allen House? It's the new western Howard County Senior Center on the west side of Route 97, just north of Carrs Mill Road. Tucked into a beautiful grove, the lovely building is invisible from the highway. Take the long driveway back to see a beautiful old home, rich in history and now refurbished to serve the seniors of our area.

Officials will hold a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for Allen House from 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday.

Don Miles, on behalf of We CARE, the Western Community Action to Reach the Elderly, will present a check for $3,150 to County Executive Charles I. Ecker.

The group raised the money for Allen House at its auction earlier this fall. Children from the all-day kindergarten program directed by the Department of Recreation and Parks at Wilde Lake High School at River Hill will sing at the ceremony. Betty Frey, whom you can meet at the opening ceremonies, is the director of the new center. Call her at 313-5440.

For information about We CARE, call Mr. Miles at 531-3589. Hall of Famer

Dayton native Alva Kruhm was inducted into the Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Fame Oct. 19.

Selected from a large pool of nominees, Mrs. Kruhm was one of five recipients of the Geri Award for Humanitarian Service. The Geri award symbolizes dedication to community, something that comes naturally to Mrs. Kruhm.

Her nonstop service to Linden-Linthicum United Methodist Church and leadership and service in countless local organizations were only part of what the selection committee saw in several letters of nomination.

She's also quick to help neighbors, such as a housebound person who needs a haircut or an ill person who needs a lift to the doctor's office. Mrs. Kruhm is a tireless worker at her church and a participant in Christmas in April.

She also has been on two mission trips in five years, to Costa Rica and Puerto Rico, where she and others cleared fields and built septic systems.

Mrs. Kruhm taught at Clarksville Elementary School and Clarksville Middle School for 31 years, retiring in 1984. Mary Flanery, secretary of the Howard County Educators Association Retired Teachers, nominated Mrs. Kruhm, who serves as that organization's president.

American Education Week

"Good Schools are a Great Investment" is the theme for American Education Week Monday through Nov. 17.

Glenwood Middle School Principal Vincent Catania says, "Parents and teachers have so much to learn from each other to help kids become more successful in school. Just by sitting down and talking to each other about an individual child for a few minutes, we give that child a better chance to be successful in school."

Mr. Catania and the principals of all the western Howard County public schools invite you to visit your child's school next week.
