ON NOV. 13, the Westminster High School Instrumental Boosters will present the internationally known big-band leader, trumpeter and jazz legend Maynard Ferguson and his Big Bop Nouveau Band.

A performance by the Westminster High School Jazz Ensemble will add to the enjoyment of the evening. The concert will take place at 7 p.m. at the high school, 1225 Washington Road (Route 32) in Westminster.

Mr. Ferguson did something few jazz musicians have done when he crossed from the jazz charts to pop charts with the song "Gonna Fly Now" from the movie "Rocky."

His high trumpeting notes can be heard above his band on the record that became a gold album and was one of three Grammy nominations this musical great has achieved during a lifetime of music.

"Maynard Ferguson first became known in the '50s," said Susan Gnagy Fegan, publicist for the event. "He played with a lot of well-known names, including Jimmy Dorsey. Many of his band members have gone on to become big names, like Chuck Mangione and Don Ellis. He has recorded the soundtracks to many movies. One of them is 'The Ten Commandments.' "

Mr. Ferguson has been elected to the Jazz Hall of Fame and has won National Association for Campus Activity Music Education awards.

Ms. Fegan said that music education is very important to this jazz great.

"That is why he still visits schools," she said. "He stresses the importance of feeling the music."

Mr. Ferguson has been known to pick the cream of the crop, the best musicians from the high schools he visits, often inviting them to tour with him.

"The roof will come off the Westminster High School auditorium when he plays," Ms. Fegan said.

Advance tickets to the performance can be purchased for $10 at Stu's Music Shop or Coffey's Music Store.

Tickets can be ordered by mail by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: 318 Wayne Ave., Westminster 21157.

Tickets ordered by mail also can be picked up at the door at the performance.

Tickets will be sold at the door for $12.

Ms. Barbosa's mixed-media collection includes sculptures and art books that explore the magic mixture of logic and the imagination. She is a resident of Frederick.

Josh Selzer, Western Maryland College's arts manager, said Ms. Barbosa did not provide much information about her work because "she feels the art should speak for itself."
