Sara C. Howard, 85, Towson florist

Sara C. Howard, who started a Towson florist business with her husband in 1935 and worked to make it flourish for 45 years, died of pneumonia Thursday at her Lutherville home. She was 85.

Howard Florist provided flowers for debutante parties in the days when "coming out" was part of social life, said Donna M. Tracey, Mrs. Howard's daughter.

Mrs. Howard was born in Baltimore and educated in city schools. She and Charles E. Howard Sr. were married in 1928. Mr. Howard worked for Radebaugh's Florists and Greenhouses in Towson, learned the business and then decided to open his own.

Mr. and Mrs. Howard moved their operation to York Road in Lutherville in 1945, and remained there until they retired in 1980. The business is now closed.

Mrs. Howard was a member of Valley Baptist Church in Lutherville.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Ruck Towson Funeral Home, 1050 York Road.

Surviving, in addition to her husband and daughter in Lutherville, are a brother, Robert V. Cranston of Lutherville; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
