No. 1 Fallston girls finish off Wright, 2-0, for trip to states Wright boys slip past Parkville for region title

Top-ranked Fallston got all the scoring it needed when Megan Tulley took a pass from Amber Bradford and put the ball in the upper left corner of the goal eight minutes into the second half, and the Cougars went on to a 2-0 victory over No. 5 C. Milton Wright in a Class 3A-4A North regional semifinal last night.

The result -- Courtney Benner got the second goal in the final minute -- moved Fallston, winner of 31 straight games, including last year's Class 1A-2A title, to 14-0 this year, and the Cougars have now outscored their foes, 86-2.

On the other side, it was another heart-breaking loss for Wright (11-3). The Mustangs have dropped their past two regular-season games to Fallston, and this was their second straight regional setback after bowing to Perry Hall in a shootout last year.

As for last night, it is hard to imagine two more superior, evenly matched teams playing any better under miserable field conditions.

Although no rain fell during the day, the surface was swampy from previous rainfall, and there was a boys regional game played just ahead of it.

The combination made for terrible footing, but the Cougars time and again were able to use their speed to thwart Wright offensive thrusts, particularly by fleet senior Miranda James.

It helped that Fallston junior sweeper Jenny Cook is so quick, and she is able to turn and direct a ball upfield instead of only getting to it partially and booting it out of bounds.

This marked the second game Wright coach Peter Griffiths had switched seniors Becky Gerhart and James, dropping Gerhart back to sweeper and moving James to center halfback.

But as Cook said, "As far as I was concerned, the only change was having to be aware of where Miranda was on the field."
