Redskins lose guard Smith

November 03, 1995|By Vito Stellino

Guard Tre Johnson will return to the Washington Redskins' starting lineup Sunday, but the man he's replacing, Vernice Smith, now is ailing.

A knee injury Smith suffered Sunday has flared up, and he will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery today. He will miss two to four weeks.

Smith may miss only one game because the Redskins have a bye after the game against the Chiefs, but for Sunday, rookie Brian Thure, a sixth-round pick, will be the top backup lineman.

The Redskins also hope that Cory Ramyer, a second-round draft pick who broke his leg in July, will be able to make his debut.
