Theresa R. Schmidt, 82, special education teacher

Theresa R. Schmidt, a retired special education teacher in the Baltimore County school system who was active in church and community groups, died Sunday at Stella Maris Hospice of complications from Alzheimer's disease. She was 82 and lived in the Homeland area.

She was born Theresa Anne Rossi in Baltimore and graduated from Seton High School in 1932. She earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland in 1936, three master's degrees, in communications disorders, reading and special education, from Loyola College and a doctorate in English at the Johns Hopkins University in 1978.

In 1965, she started Post Cana,an organization for Catholic widows and widowers now known as SWORD, which includes people separated from their spouses.

She ran fund-raising events for the St. Joseph College Alumnae Association, Mercy Medical Center and St. Matthew's Roman Catholic Church and belonged to the auxiliaries of the St. Joseph Medical Center and Villa Assumpta.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. today at the lTC Cathedral of Mary Our Queen, 5200 N. Charles St.

Her husband, H. Norbert Schmidt, died in 1963. She is survived by a daughter, Paula Schmidt of Baltimore; and a son, Paul Schmidt of White Hall.
