Back from the ashes

Pity Jeff Lipkin, who this summer bought the Hacienda -- just before it was destroyed by an electrical fire. Gardenville's long-time favorite Mexican restaurant should be up and running again at the beginning of next year, with a bright new look and some new dishes. (But Mr. Lipkin is keeping much of the popular old menu.)

Up all night

Tzu Yang isn't getting as much sleep as he'd like to these days, ever since his City Diner opened at 911 N. Charles St. "A 24-hour operation is so tough," he says. Tzu Yang also owns Kawasaki , but don't expect sushi and tempura here. His newest venture has good old-fashioned diner food, some trendier items like quesadillas, 24-hour breakfasts, and a cheerful '50s decor with lots of red and checkerboard patterns.

Cooking on camera

Meet Nancy Longo, television star. The owner/chef of Pierpoint in Fells Point is appearing in four episodes of "Ready . . . Set . . . Cook!" on the TV Food Network. Two contestants bring in surprise ingredients, and the two guest chefs have to create a dish from them in 20 minutes.

"Unfortunately I got the frozen chicken thighs and a cucumber while my opponent got veal scaloppine," says Ms. Longo with a laugh. "But they thought I was so funny they asked me to stay another day."

Check the TV listings for dates and times. Are we allowed to request our choice of waiter when we make reservations? Peerce's Plantation waiter Tom Flynn was chosen as the Restaurant Association of Maryland's "Best Server," fine dining division. Dean Comey from McHenry's in the Sheraton Inner Harbor won the casual division.
