Broadneck advances with shootout victory

Glen Burnie's Marian Ogle converted a penalty kick with 25 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at one, but after two scoreless overtimes, Broadneck (9-3-2) knocked in seven of eight penalty kicks to win a Class 3A-4A girls soccer quarterfinal.

The final score of the post-overtime shootout was 7-2.

Suzy Conrad made seven saves for Broadneck. Glen Burnie's Amy Shaklock stopped 19 shots.

* Catholic 10, Spalding 0: Nicole Brooks, Renee Basil and Becky Bieneman each scored two goals as host Catholic (10-5-4) ran away from Spalding in a Catholic League Tournament quarterfinal match.

Catholic will meet Mercy at 3:15 p.m. in tomorrow's semifinal at Patterson Park.

* John Carroll 0, St. Mary's 0 (John Carroll wins shootout, 4-1): Paige Lososkie foiled two of St. Mary's first three penalty kicks to lift visiting John Carroll (10-5-1), which plays top-seed McDonogh at Patterson Park tomorrow at 5 p.m.

Boys soccer

* Northeast 4, Southern-AA 1: Chris Pelino and Josh David scored first-half goals as visiting Northeast (4-9-1) coasted over Southern-AA (1-12) in a Class 2A East quarterfinal contest.

* Severna Park 1, Glen Burnie 1 (Severna Park wins shootout, 7-3): After goalkeeper Billy Volbering kept Glen Burnie (6-7) in the game through two halves and two overtimes, visiting Severna Park (10-4) converted seven of 10 penalty kicks in a shootout for the victory.

Scott Vane scored for Severna Park, which plays the winner of Arundel/Calvert on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Chesapeake in the Class 4A East semifinals.

Field hockey

* Chesapeake-AA 2, Perry Hall 0: Wendy Ison scored 30 seconds into the second half, assisted by Christina McGwire, as Chesapeake (10-5) defeated host Perry Hall (6-5-2) in a Class 4A East Region semifinal game.

Jessica Jones added an insurance goal for the Cougars, who outshot the Gators 14-8.

* Severna Park 2, Annapolis 1: Brittany Oakley gave Annapolis (8-5) an early 1-0 lead, but visiting Severna Park (15-0) scored twice in the final 12 minutes to escape with a victory in a Class 4A South semifinal.

Amy Noble tied it with 13 minutes left, and Athena Mahoney won it with 5:56 remaining for Severna Park, which takes on the Calvert/Northern winner in the final.

* Westminster 1, Watkins Mill 0: Senior Jen Medura scored early in the second half off a feed from Nikki Cornell to lead No. 3 Westminster to a 1-0 win over visiting Watkins Mill in a Class 4A North semifinal.
