Free agency: The following players filed: Red Sox DH Jose Canseco, Blue Jays 2B Roberto Alomar, Athletics OF Rickey Henderson, Royals P Tom Gordon, Brewers P Rob Dibble, Braves C Charlie O'Brien, Reds OF Ron Gant, Marlins P Bryan Harvey, Astros 1B Dave Magadan and two former Orioles -- Angels IF Rene Gonzales and Angels P John Habyan.

Orioles: Named Davey Johnson manager and signed him to a three-year contract.

Boston Red Sox: Declined to exercise option on contract of C Mike Macfarlane.

California Angels: Entire major-league staff will return for 1996.

Cincinnati Reds: Named Ray Knight manager. Added Marc Bombard and Jim Lett to coaching staff. Bullpen coach Grant Jackson accepted another position in organization.

Cleveland Indians: Exercised 1997 option on manager Mike Hargrove's contract. Named Dom Chiti major-league scout. Signed OF-1B Drew Denson to minor-league contract.

Detroit Tigers: Named Randy Smith GM.

Florida Marlins: Signed OF Tommy Gregg and OF Russ Morman to minor-league contracts.

Minnesota Twins: Acquired OF Chris Latham from Los Angeles Dodgers to complete a trade for P Kevin Tapani and P Mark Guthrie.

Seattle Mariners: Will exercise a $3.5 million option on DH Edgar Martinez, the AL batting champion. Will exercise a $600,000 option on IF Joey Cora and offer salary arbitration to P Norm Charlton.

Texas Rangers: Named Lee MacPhail IV assistant to GM. He had been Orioles assistant director for player development and scouting.

Hardware City Rock Cats (Double-A): Named Al Newman manager. Kept coaches Gorman Heimueller and Jim Dwyer, a former Oriole.

Basketball

Atlanta Hawks: Released F Troy Brown, G Gaylon Nickerson and G Cuonzo Martin. Signed F Matt Bullard, C Todd Mundt and G Howard Nathan. Placed G Donnie Boyce on the injured list.

Boston Celtics: Released C Tito Horford and C Roger Smith.

Dallas Mavericks: Waived G Brian Fair, F Marcus Grant and F Brian Hopgood.

Denver Nuggets: Traded G Robert Pack to the Washington Bullets for F Don MacLean and G Doug Overton.
