Word O' Ransom breezes to win in Laurel feature

October 30, 1995|By Kent Baker | Kent Baker,SUN STAFF

Long shot Word O'Ransom had everything her way in the $37,625 Stefanita Stakes yesterday at Laurel Park.

The 15-to-1 choice sped into the lead at the start and went on to a front-running victory under Omar Klinger, her third in the past four starts.

With Klinger aboard, Word O'Ransom is 5-for-5, prompting the jockey to say: "I guess she likes me."

The score was the first of two straight for trainer Mary Eppler, who completed the last of the day's running daily doubles with P. J. Higgins ($10 straight) in the 10th race.

Word O'Ransom's margin was three lengths over closer Up An Eighth, the favorite in the field of 10, with Ayanka, also a long shot, another two lengths back.

Eppler said Word O'Ransom appeared to come "out of the race OK, but we'll wait and see before we make a decision on what's next for her."

A Kentucky-bred daughter of Red Ransom, Word O'Ransom pushed her lifetime earnings above $80,000 with her fifth win in 12 career starts.

NOTES: Today marks the final day of Monday simulcasting at Laurel. Beginning next week, Mondays will be dropped from the schedule. . . . Klinger and Jesus Bracho, who rode P. J. Higgins, had the only riding doubles on the program.
