25 years ago (week of Oct. 18-24, 1970) It was announced that a new cable TV system would serve Columbia, beginning in January 1971. The system would be built and operated by Time-Life Broadcast. It would offer 18 channels, including some experimental programs and services.

50 years ago (week of Oct. 21-27, 1945) The Howard County Council of Homemakers held its annual Achievement Day at Ellicott City High School. The morning was devoted to a business meeting and election of officers. The afternoon's program included informative presentations and entertainment.
