October 29, 1995

The National Association of Realtors can be found on the Internet preparing for its national convention Nov. 10-13 in Atlanta.

Information about the event, including an overview of the program and a detailed schedule of seminars, can be found at http://www.Refer.com on the World Wide Web.

The NAR convention features the largest real estate trade show in the world, with more than 1,000 exhibitors. Guest speakers will include Gen. Colin Powell, retired chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Katie Couric, co-host of NBC's Today show.

NAR also has a fax-on-demand service that provides information about the convention. The phone number is (800) 695-0062.

No recession in sight, experts tell conference

An economist for the National Association of Home Builders says total housing starts should end this year at 1.347 million, including 1.067 million single-family starts. In 1996, starts should increase by 3.3 percent, according to NAHB Chief Economist David Seiders.

Speakers at the NAHB's Construction Forecast Conference last week said the economy is in relatively good shape with no recession in sight.

Mr. Seiders characterized the first-half economic slowdown this year as `the pause that refreshes,` adding that inflation and gross domestic product figures look healthy.

Paul Boltz, financial economist with T. Rowe Price, said he expects the Federal Reserve to ease interest rates further to offset the gradually restrictive fiscal policies needed to produce cuts in the federal budget.

"The economy is just going to keep rolling along," he said, adding that the Fed is doing a better job of restraining boom cycles.
