NationsBank has given a $500,000 gift to the University of Maryland's College of Business and Management, the university announced this week.

The money will go to "enhance faculty research and retention" and "to fund student scholarships in the college," the business school said.

"They're investing in their future employees," said Jo Anne Schram, assistant dean of the business school.

Ms. Schram noted that NationsBank, based in Charlotte, N.C., had recruited about a dozen graduates of the business school last year and has expressed its intention of hiring another 30 to 40 graduates next spring.

The business school, which offers both undergraduate and graduate programs, is based in College Park.

This is not the first time that NationsBank has contributed to the University of Maryland's business school.

Three years ago, the bank agreed to donate $10,000 a year for what has come to be known as "The NationsBank CEO Speaker Series.

William E. Kirwan, the university's president, called the bank gift "further affirmation of the stature of our college of business."
