New York Yankees: Named Bob Watson GM.

St. Louis Cardinals: Signed Tony La Russa to a two-year contract with an option year for a third. Announced that former manager Mike Jorgensen will return to his former position as director of player development. Named Dave Duncan pitching coach. Retained coaches Lou Brock and Red Schoendienst in capacities that have yet to be determined.

Montreal Expos: Re-signed P Denis Boucher, OF Tony Barron, OF F. P. Santangelo and 1B Julian Yan to Triple-A Ottawa.

New York Mets: Manager Toby Harrah and coaches Bob Apodaca and Ron Washington will return to Triple-A Norfolk. Manager John Tamargo and pitching coach Bill Latham will return to Double-A Binghamton. Named John Gibbons manager and Randy Neimann coach of Single-A St. Lucie. Manager Howie Freiling and pitching coach Ray Ripplemeyer will return as manager of Single-A Capital City.

Basketball

Cleveland Cavaliers: Signed free-agent G John Crotty.

Los Angeles Clippers: Waived C Constantin Popa. Announced that C Stanley Roberts, who reported to training camp overweight and out of shape, will be suspended without pay when the regular season opens Nov. 3 unless he meets a weight clause in his contract. Roberts is due to earn $3 million.

New York Knicks: Waived F Ted Allen and F John Strickland.

Philadelphia 76ers: Waived G Morlon Wiley and C-F Andre Reid.

College

ACC: Named Maryland's Sara Salam a co-Player of the Week in field hockey.

ECAC: Named Navy DB Sean Andrews Division 1-A Defensive Player of the Week and Navy FB Tim Cannada to the honor roll.

NAC: Named Towson State's Petteri Kaijasilta men's soccer Player of the Week for the second week in a row.

Furman: Named Tracy Bergan (Loyola College) assistant basketball coach.

Wake Forest: Suspended KR Myles Savage because of a violation of team rules.

Football

NFL: Suspended Philadelphia Eagles OT Bernard Williams for the remainder of the season in accordance with the NFL Policy and Program for Drugs of Abuse and Alcohol. Suspended Pittsburgh Steelers DT Joel Steed four games for steroid use.

New England Patriots: QB Drew Bledsoe signed the seven-year, $42 million deal that he agreed on in training camp, ESPN reported.

Minnesota Vikings: Signed LB Jack Del Rio, their leading tackler each of his three seasons with the team, to a two-year contract extension worth $3.2 million.

Philadelphia Eagles: Signed FB James Saxon to a one-year contract. Waived T Troy Drake.

Hockey

NHL: Named Edmonton Oilers G Bill Ranford Player of the Week.

Buffalo Sabres: Assigned LW Curtis Brown to WHL Moose Jaw and C Wayne Primeau to OHL Owen Sound.

Edmonton Oilers: Sent C Kevin Paden of ECHL Wheeling.

New York Rangers: Recalled F Don Langdon from AHL Binghamton.

Ottawa Senators: Recalled RW Rob Gaudreau from AHL Prince Edward Island. PEI recalled C Cosmo DuPaul from CHL Thunder Bay.

Soccer

Cincinnati Silverbacks (NPSL): Agreed to terms with M Bruce Murray.
