Front-nine birdies help Tallent win Baltimore CC Invitational Congressional member has lone sub-par round

Pat Tallent wrapped up the revived Baltimore Country Club Invitational tournament with three successive front-nine birdies and finished with the only sub-par round of the two-day event over the East Course at Five Farms yesterday.

Tallent, from Congressional CC, and one-half of the winning team in last week's invitational at the Bethesda club, got one on his own this time, shooting 74-68142, four shots clear of runner-up Jerry Courville Jr., 74-72146, in the select 22-man field.

"I'm glad I got the first one," Tallent said of his name's going on the Maryland Cup, a tall, sterling silver trophy first played for in 1911. The tournament was dropped after the 1939 event, to be resuscitated this year through the efforts of several BCC members.

"Now, I don't have to worry about next year, when I'm sure a stronger field will be here to play this wonderful course." The 6,681-yard course plays to a par of 35-3570.

Tallent and Courville, who had waged a dramatic 20-hole struggle in last month's U.S. Mid-Amateur at Caves Valley GC, were paired for the second straight day, and, as it developed, gave Tallent a chance to get a firsthand look at one of his chief challengers.

"After those birdies, I thought I'd be close to the lead, at least," Tallent, 42, said. "I knew I had Jerry covered -- each time I made a bogey [two], he did, too -- but I didn't know where I stood with the rest."

The 418-yard 16th hole appeared to be key when Tallent hit a 4-iron shot from a downhill lie that carried to within 15 feet of the flagstick, and he made the putt.
