Mechanic for URTA honored as 'Unsung Hero of the Year'

October 23, 1995

Howard Jones, a mechanic for the east Columbia-based Urban Rural Transportation Alliance (URTA), has received the "Unsung Hero of the Year Award" from the Transportation Association of Maryland.

Mr. Jones, a Baltimore resident who maintains URTA's fleet of 24 vehicles and makes emergency responses to breakdowns, has kept many vehicles with readings topping 150,000 miles on the road and passing inspections, wrote URTA officials who nominated him.

URTA provides van transportation for elderly, disabled and low-income county residents.

"Despite the tremendous amount of work placed upon him in keeping an aging fleet on the road, Howard approaches his job in an upbeat, positive manner. He does an excellent job in handling the daily problems that occur, and always reacts quickly and efficiently to breakdowns and problems," URTA officials wrote.
