A man walked out of the Wal-Mart in the 3500 block of Russett Green East Tuesday with a fax machine he hadn't paid for, despite the efforts of a store security guard, county police said yesterday.
The guard told police he saw the man walk into the store's electronics department shortly after 3 p.m. and pick up a $250 fax machine. The man then walked to a fenced lawn and garden area, threw the fax machine over the fence and fled, police said.
The security officer told police he set up a surveillance camera to watch the fax machine in the parking lot and waited for the man to come back, police said. The man later drove over to the fax machine, put it into his car and tried to flee, but the security guard and the store manager blocked the car to keep the man from leaving, police said. The man revved his engine and sped away, nearly hitting the store employees, police said.
The security guard gave police the license number of the car, but several attempts to contact the car's owner were unsuccessful, police said.
