October 17, 1995|By FROM STAFF REPORTS

One of three men attempting to rob a Northeast Baltimore liquor store was shot fatally last night by a store clerk, police said.

About 9 p.m., three men entered Bay City Liquors in the 4900 block of Frankford Ave. While two remained near the front door, the third man pulled out a handgun, jumped a metal railing, announced a holdup and fired three shots at a wall, police said.

They said the clerk got a .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun from behind the counter and fired several rounds at the gunman, hitting him once in the chest.

The three ran out of the store and south to the 5200 block of Sipple Ave. where the wounded gunman collapsed in a front yard, police said. The man, whose identity was not available last night, died at the scene.
