Man arrested after quarrel with wife in car

County police arrested an Annapolis man on assault and battery charges Monday after an argument with his wife.

The argument began about 3 p.m. as a couple drove to a movie theater in the 8100 block of Jumpers Hole Road, police said. The woman asked the man to pull over to let her out of the car, which he did, police said. As she began to get out, he grabbed her and pulled her back into the car.

She took his wallet off the -- board and threw it out the window, police said. At that point, the man started choking her, police said. As they fought, two passers-by came to her aid.

John W. McCartney, 53, of the 1200 block of Southbreeze Lane was charged with assault and battery of his wife, Carolyn.
