An east Columbia man was sentenced yesterday to 10 years in prison for molesting his 9-year-old daughter last October.

The man, 47, had pleaded guilty to second-degree rape as part of a plea agreement he accepted in Howard Circuit Court in August. His name will not be published to protect the identity of the victim.

The girl told authorities that her father came into her bedroom at their apartment in Columbia's Owen Brown village and had intercourse with her while she slept.

The man was so distraught over his actions that he attempted suicide by walking into traffic at a Columbia intersection, according to a police report filed in Circuit Court.

Calling the crime "egregious," Judge Raymond Kane Jr. sentenced the man to 15 years in prison, with five years suspended. The man must complete five years of probation and counseling upon his release.

Judge Kane, following the recommendation of prosecutors, went against the wishes of the man's wife and daughter. The girl wrote a letter asking the judge not to send her father to jail so her family could be reunited.
