South Carroll student selected for U.S. leadership conference

Mike Shay of Mount Airy has been selected to attend the National Young Leaders Conference Oct. 24-29 in Washington.

The conference is a leadership development program for high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit.

A senior at South Carroll High School, Mike will be among 350 students to attend the annual conference.

The theme will be "The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today." Students will interact and meet with leaders and news makers from the three branches of government, the media and diplomatic corps.

Mike also will meet with officials who represent Carroll County to discuss local issues.

Fire

Mount Airy: Mount Airy responded to a transformer fire in the 500 block of E. Ridgeville Blvd. at 12:54 a.m. Friday. Units were out 15 minutes.

Mount Airy: Mount Airy responded to investigate the report of a fire alarm sounding in the 12300 block of Sherwood Forest Drive in Frederick County at 8:40 p.m. Thursday. Units were out 25 minutes.

Mount Airy: Mount Airy responded to a fire alarm sounding on Oak View Drive in Frederick County at 3:49 p.m. Thursday. Units were out 20 minutes.

Mount Airy: Mount Airy was dispatched to investigate smoke in the area of South Main Street at 10:41 a.m. Thursday. Units were out 30 minutes.
