Officers' wives run craft shop

Volunteer Spotlight

October 08, 1995|By Kevin Harrison

The volunteers: Beth Ohnesorge and Sue Brickley are volunteers at the Patchwork Porch, a nonprofit craft consignment shop sponsored by the Fort Meade Officers' Wives' Club.

Mrs. Ohnesorge, an Odenton resident and a member of the wives club, manages the shop. She worked at a similar one when her husband was stationed in Munich, Germany. She became involved in the shop shortly after they arrived at Fort Meade in January.

Mrs. Brickley, who lives on the Army post, painted the shop's interior during the summer.

Although the shop accepts consignments only from people with a military ID, it welcomes shoppers looking for homemade crafts. A portion of the sales is used to support scholarships, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and other community-related programs and organizations.

"We have lots of Halloween stuff right now, and, of course, we are stocking up for Christmas," Mrs. Ohnesorge said. "We want TTC people to come in and know they can find a nice gift, if that's what they need, or something for their home."

Mrs. Brickley said she refurbished and redecorated the shop during the summer "to give it a new look.

"I was standing around one day and said, 'This old place has these old-fashioned colors. We need to liven it up.'

"This is my second year of volunteering, and I'm usually there every week. I really enjoy it because I get to meet so different people."

Information: The Patchwork Porch, at Ernie Pyle and Eighth Street, is open from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the first Saturday of each month.
