Westminster man is charged with robbery

October 05, 1995

A 20-year-old Westminster man, whose picture was picked out of a police mug shot book by a man who says he was robbed, was held on $25,000 bond yesterday. Kane Allan McGruger, of the first block of S. Church St., was charged with one count each of robbery, robbery with a deadly weapon, assault with intent to rob, assault and theft.

City police said the driver of a Countywide Taxi took two men to a parking lot off Center Street at Court Street about 12:30 a.m. Aug. 10. Both men left the cab, telling the driver to wait while they went into a nearby apartment to get the $2 fare.

The driver saw a man standing outside with one hand under his nTC shirt indicating he had a gun who said, "You know what this is, give me your money."

The driver pleaded with the robber not to take his money, but was told, "Don't you know I'll bust a cap [bullet] in your head."

Police said the driver turned over an undisclosed amount of money and the robber fled. The driver, who was not injured in the robbery, chose a suspect's picture out of the police mug shot book.

The passengers did not return to pay the fare and neither is thought to be the robber, police said.
