On the field: The Orioles' public relations department has been pumping shortstop Cal Ripken and outfielder Brady Anderson for Gold Gloves in recent weeks. Anderson showed why yesterday, catching a high drive to the warning track in center field over his shoulder, a la Willie Mays. Ripken played in his 70th consecutive game without an error yesterday; his last occurred on July 18 in Texas.
In the dugout: Orioles manager Phil Regan said after the game that if he had to do it all over again, one thing he would do is stick with his starting pitchers a little longer. He applied that theory in the last weeks of the season, and many of his relievers went weeks between appearances. Armando Benitez's outing against Cleveland Sept. 10 turned out to be his last of the year.
