No. 13 Severn stymied by John Carroll defense No. 5 Arundel handles Chesapeake to go to 4-0

October 01, 1995|By FROM STAFF REPORTS

With an explosive offense, John Carroll made Severn look nothing like the defending Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Division champions yesterday.

The Patriots' defense held Severn's standout running backs, sophomores Dennard Melton and Vo Craig, to 29 and 75 yards rushing, respectively, and allowed just 208 total yards for the game -- fewer than 50 yards in the second half -- as host John Carroll (2-1) upset No. 13 Severn, 35-7.

The Patriots' offense converted two fumble recoveries into touchdowns and got a couple of big plays of its own, including a 50-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Brad Meerholz to Barrett, to hand Severn its first loss in four games.

John Butcher ran 75 yards for Severn's only score.

* Arundel 34, Chesapeake-AA 25: Quarterback Erik Lipton threw for 215 yards and three touchdowns on 9-for-16 passing, and John Norsworthy totaled 110 yards in offense to lead No. 5 Arundel (4-0) past Chesapeake (1-3).

* Annapolis 12, Old Mill 9, OT: Montez Sellers capped a three-play, 10-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run to lift visiting Annapolis (3-1) over Old Mill (2-2) in overtime.

* Southern-AA 32, Queen Anne's 8: Paul Brown rushed for 87 yards on six carries and two touchdowns as host Southern-AA (1-3) defeated Queen Anne's (0-4).

* Einstein 34, Northeast 0: Mukala Sikyala rushed 14 times for 213 yards and three touchdowns to power host Einstein (2-2) past Northeast (1-3).
