Jeff Thomas of South Plainfield, N.J., shot a 3-under-par 67 and took a four-stroke lead midway through the annual Middle Atlantic Amateur championship at Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase yesterday.

Dave Rasley of Bethesda and Lakewood Country Club, one of three to share the opening-round lead at 68, dropped to 73 for a 141 total. Richard Holland (72-70) and Scott Inman (68-74) followed at 142. Tim Vigotsky, the other early leader, dropped back with 79.

Thomas, 36, the 1993 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion and a match-

play qualifier in last week's U.S. Mid-Amateur, birdied the two par-5s, and the par-3 16th for a second time, where he holed a 15-foot putt. He had two par-saving putts, including a 20-footer at the ninth green.

The cut came at 154, and 67 players will play in today's third round.
