Hits and misses

September 28, 1995|By Buster Olney

On the field: Making his first start since Aug. 31, Kevin Bass had a double and a homer -- his first extra-base hits of any kind since July 19, and his first homer since June 17.

In the dugout: Paul Menhart started against the Orioles, a week since his last start. Toronto manager Cito Gaston was cognizant of the fact that the last time Menhart started against the Orioles, on Aug. 2, he allowed one hit over eight innings -- losing to Mike Mussina, 1-0, when Harold Baines hit a homer.

In the clubhouse: Scott Erickson had so much movement on his sinking fastball as he warmed up that bullpen catcher Sammy Snider had a tough time hanging on. "I've had the same stuff all along," Erickson said. "I'm just having a little more consistency."
