Art*Fest and then some

The 13th annual Towson Art*Fest brings more than 200 of the area's best amateur and professional artists, crafts people, photographers and antique collectors to Towson on Saturday. Their work will be displayed for sale on the grounds of the Towson Courthouse from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will also be an art contest for local students and art activities for children.

But there's more than art. Children's activities have been expanded this year to include story time by local TV personalities, costumed characters, face painting and an exhibit antique toys from Hampton Mansion. Continual entertainment will be provided in the morning by local high school bands and choruses and in the afternoon by a female vocalist, country line dancers and a progressive rock band. A food court will offer all kinds of food from Towson eateries.

The event is sponsored by Historic Towson Inc., assisted by the Greater Towson Jaycees. Admission is free. Call (410) 828-8629.

Enlist in the Civil War

The B&O Railroad Museum takes a giant step backward to the days of the Civil War with its re-creation of the encampment at Camp Carroll on Saturday. The event offers entertainment for the whole family with such activities as rail-bending demonstrations, artillery and cavalry drills. A recruitment table will be set up where children can join the army and take home their souvenir "military enrollment" form.

Museum visitors should stop by the Roundhouse to see the photography exhibit, "In the Vise: The Baltimore & Ohio in the Civil War," which remains on view through January.

Admission is $6 for adults; $5 for seniors; $4 for ages 5 to 12; free for children 4 and under. There's free parking on museum grounds, located at 901 W. Pratt St. Call (410) 752-2388.
