Brewers update

Like the Orioles, the Brewers (63-72) recently have slid out of the wild-card picture. Milwaukee has lost 18 of its past 23 and is hitting just .222 during that stretch. B. J. Surhoff is among the league's leading hitters with a .330 average, but he is in the midst of a 5-for-28 slump. The Brewers, who will start two rookie pitchers in the series (Givens and Sparks), have a combined 32 victories from rookie pitchers this season. Since 1986, only two teams have had more rookie wins. The Brewers have hit 10

grand slams this season, joining the 1938 Detroit Tigers and the 1987 New York Yankees as the only teams to do so. John Jaha, who set a career high with four hits against the Orioles on Aug. 4, has hit three of the grand slams.
