Hits and misses

September 21, 1995|By Buster Olney

On the field: Scott Erickson won his fourth consecutive decision, following a familiar pattern. The Orioles scored runs early for him, and Erickson protected the lead to pick up his 12th victory of the year, eighth with the Orioles. Erickson has four complet games in his last six starts.

In the dugout: When Manny Alexander went down and out for the season with a strained groin, Orioles manager Phil Regan said he'd probably go with Bret Barberie for the rest of the year at second. However, with Barberie fighting a losing battle for consistency at the plate , Jeff Huson has taken over at second the last two games. Jarvis Brown filled in for Mark Smith in right.

In the clubhouse: "He seemed to get into his stride in the third, fourth or fifth inning," Regan said of Erickson. "He kind of settles into a groove. I tell you what, he's been a great pitcher for us."
