Portland Trail Blazers: Traded F Otis Thorpe to the Pistons for the rights to G Randolph Childress and F Bill Curley.

Miami Heat: Named Scotty Robertson, Bob McAdoo, and Stan Van Gundy assistant coaches. Named former UMBC coach and Washington Bullets assistant Jeff Bzdelik scout.

ECAC: Named Navy DB Sean Andrews football Rookie of the Week. Navy WR Matt Scornavacchi won All-ECAC honors.

Atlantic Coast Conference: Named Virginia sophomore Peggy Boutilier (Roland Park) field hockey Player of the Week.

Big South Conference: Named UMBC senior striker Denise Schilte women's soccer Player of the Week.

Liberty Bowl: Signed a multi-year contract with the Big East and Conference USA to match representatives in the annual bowl game beginning in 1996.

Independence Bowl: Announced a four-year agreement to take the No. 5 or No. 6 selection out of the SEC through 1998.

This is the bowl's first affiliation since 1980.

Duke: Named Theresa Ingram (Lansdowne), a two-time GTE Academic All-American in lacrosse at Maryland, assistant women's coach.

NHL: Suspended Chicago Blackhawks RW Joe Murphy 10 games without pay and fined him $1,000 as a result of a slashing incident in a preseason game.

Mighty Ducks of Anaheim: Assigned D Alain Deeks, D Nikolai Tsulygin, G Mike O'Neill and LW Jeremy Stevenson to AHL Baltimore. Agreed to terms with RW Peter Leboutillier on a multi-year contract and assigned him to Baltimore. Added the Raleigh IceCaps as an ECHL affiliate.

Washington Capitals: Signed free-agent G Ron Tugnutt.

Tennis

ATP Tour: Reduced from three weeks to two weeks the suspension of player Jeff Tarango for remarks in a post-match news conference at Wimbledon. Upheld a $20,000 fine imposed on Tarango but agreed to hold it in abeyance for six months and rescind it if Tarango maintains acceptable conduct.
