Historic District land slated for apartments

Members of the Howard County Housing Commission have entered an agreement to purchase land in Ellicott City's Historic District to build a 12-unit apartment building for low- and moderate-income elderly residents.

The commission, a nonprofit agency overseen by the county, is working with Columbia developer D. A. McDaniels Inc., to purchase land along the Tiber and Hudson rivers in Ellicott City for the apartment complex.

On Tuesday, commissioners said they would give property owner Marvin L. Sachs until Nov. 30 to show that the land he is offering can be used for the project.

The Tiber-Hudson Project would be the second housing project the commission has undertaken to create more affordable housing for the county's growing low- and moderate-income senior population.

Earlier this month, construction began on a 60-unit complex off Guilford Road in Jessup, the commission's first project designated for seniors. Residents will pay 30 percent of their income, or a minimum of $240 a month, for the apartments, most of them one-bedroom.

Howard County is considering a $210,000 grant to the commission for the Tiber-Hudson Project.

Police log

Ellicott City: 6900 block of Garland Lane: A guitar, amplifier, video cassette recorder and compact discs were stolen from a home Sunday.

Ellicott City: 4600 block of Manor Lane: Tools were stolen from a garage between Saturday and Monday, police said.
