Meeting scheduled on expanding deer hunt

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has scheduled a public meeting for 7 p.m. Sept. 28 at Fallston High School to discuss a proposal to include the Pleasantville section of Gunpowder Falls State Park in the Sweet Air managed white-tailed deer hunt.

The proposal was made after area residents expressed concern about the large deer population in the park and the negative effect of deer not only on park vegetation and wildlife, but also on crops and shrubs.

The park's 400-acre Pleasantville section is located on the northeast side of the Route 165 and Pleasantville Road intersection, along the Little Gunpowder River.

An average of 130 deer per square mile of forest land was counted during a study three years ago.

State wildlife biologists said the herd size is continuing to grow and must be reduced and controlled to prevent damage to the herd and ecosystem.
