Maryland scores with show houses

What a coup. Of 1995's 10 most beautiful show house rooms featured in the October House Beautiful, three are from Maryland. Closest to home is the blue-and-ivory dining room designed by John Andersson and Ginny Burns for Papier Interiors at the Baltimore Symphony Decorators' Show House. (The two designers have since left Papier to start their own firm, ++ Coppermine Terrace Interiors, with third partner Anne Gurbel.)

In late spring, designer Carey Reid Kirk created a stunning outdoor living room on the porch of the Southern Maryland Decorators' Show House in St. Mary's County. It gets a page to itself in House Beautiful. Indoor-outdoor rooms are definitely the way to go: The third Maryland winner was the garden room in the Talbot County Historical Society Show House designed by Darryl Savage and Anthony Awkard.

You love them for their duck boots. Now the folks at L. L. Bean are bringing you wool rugs and tableware and ladder-back chairs. The company's fall home furnishings catalog is filled with the rustic, casual, sturdy products and crafts you'd expect from the Maine outdoor outfitter.

Look for blankets "tested and proven on Maine winter nights," solid maple stools, and my favorite: a "comfort reader pillow." Covered in colors like blueberry, spruce and plum, the two-way baffled pillow has softer cushioning on one side, firmer on the other. The pillow is $26, the cover $15. Think holidays

The idea of Christmas in September may make some people wince. But given the long lead time in ordering furniture and decorative accessories, now's the time to start thinking seasonally if you're planning to spruce things up for the holidays.

Gaines McHale Antiques & Home is having a "Home for the Holidays" week starting Sept. 17. The showroom will be filled with vignettes on decorating for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Hanukkah.

This afternoon floral designer Eleanor Oster will give demonstrations on creating holiday arrangements, wreaths and swags. And look for sales on a large selection of tables, armoires, chairs, chests, dressers and garden statuary. Gaines McHale is located at 836 Leadenhall St. Call (410) 625-1900 for more information.
