D.C. group interested in Mariners, too

SEATTLE -- Washington businessman William Collins, chairman of a Northern Virginia group that is poised to bid for the Pittsburgh Pirates, says he would be interested in purchasing the Seattle Mariners should that team be put up for sale.

"If lightning strikes and we are rewarded with an opportunity to purchase that club [the Mariners], that is what our goal is -- to bring major-league baseball back to the national capital area," Collins said.

Mariners owners have said they will sell the team if King County, Wash., voters reject a proposal Tuesday to build a baseball stadium.
