Shuffle of administrators approved by school board

Margaret E. Pfaff is the new principal at Eldersburg Elementary, and several other administrators have been transferred and promoted, in a round of principal musical chairs at yesterday's school board meeting.

The school board approved Ms. Pfaff's promotion from assistant principal at Eldersburg, and another promotion of teacher Dennis R. Kniss to assistant principal at Westminster West Middle School. Mr. Kniss has been a middle school teacher in Westminster since 1971.

Several other transfers were announced, but did not require votes.

Two vacancies remain: assistant principals at Eldersburg, to replace Ms. Pfaff since her promotion, and at Piney Ridge Elementary School, to replace Norma Jean Swam. Ms. Swam was transferred to Sandymount Elementary School.

The Sandymount position is new, because the school's enrollment grew to 571 students this year. Carroll elementary schools don't get assistant principals unless the enrollment is 550 or more. Sandymount hovered at about 540 students last year.

Since school began Aug. 28, there have been a few other changes in administrators. Robert Bowden, formerly assistant principal at South Carroll High School, is new acting principal at the Gateway Program alternative high school. The board appointed him during a meeting Aug. 29.

Janice Byrd replaces Mr. Bowden. She had been dividing her time as assistant principal and work coordinator, and now will be a full-time assistant principal.

Filling Ms. Byrd's shoes temporarily will be Lacye Shank, an English teacher at South Carroll.
