Sparrows Point finally collects a varsity victory

Na'im Young scored the game's only touchdown in the first quarter as Sparrows Point (1-0), which has not fielded a varsity team the last two seasons, defeated visiting Colonel Richardson of Caroline County (0-1), 6-0, yesterday.

* Hickey School 18, Douglass 0: Keith Black passed for a touchdown and ran for a touchdown and Willie Mitchell caught a touchdown pass and had three interceptions as The Hickey School won its inaugural football game, defeating Douglass (0-1) in David White's debut as the Ducks' coach.

* Calvert Hall 22, Dulaney 16: Bill Kauffmann's touchdown run with 8:40 remaining in regulation lifted Calvert Hall (1-0) past Dulaney (0-1).

Jason Marrow rushed 16 times for 143 yards and two touchdowns for the Cardinals, which rallied from a 16-7 first-quarter deficit.

The Lions reached Calvert Hall's 4-yard line with under three minutes left, but couldn't score.

* Potomac 8, Walbrook 6: Joseph Chaney recovered a fumble in the end zone and host Potomac of Prince George's County completed a fourth-quarter rally with the conversion as it beat Walbrook (0-1).

The Warriors used a 55-yard punt return by Norris Johnson to take a 6-0 lead against Potomac (1-0), ranked No. 12 by The Washington Post.

* St. Mary's 14, Pallotti 0: Kevin Grace completed four passes, two for touchdowns, and Rashi Reed had 15 carries for 114 yards and caught a 29-yard touchdown pass to help visiting St. Mary's (1-0) down Pallotti (0-1).

* Atholton 35, Northeast 0: Jason Sandner ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns on just seven carries to lead host Atholton (1-0) over Northeast (0-1).

* Mount Hebron 54, Harford Tech 0: Mike Machiron had nine carries for 105 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead visiting Mount Hebron (1-0) over Harford Tech (0-1).

Chris Carlotta added 10 carries for 111 yards and two touchdowns for the Vikings. Mount Hebron rushed for 332 yards.

* Severn 13, Bullis Prep 12: John Butcher's touchdown with eight minutes remaining in regulation lifted Severn (1-0) past visiting Bullis Prep (0-1). Dennard Melton rushed 19 times for 199 yards and one touchdown.
