A 31-year-old Westminster man was killed when his northbound vehicle was struck from behind and propelled into the path of another car on Route 97 at Old Meadow Branch Road about 7:35 p.m. Thursday.

Marc J. Rowan, a county maintenance worker who lived in the 100 block of Lincoln Road, was pronounced dead at the site of the crash, according to state police.

Officers said Mr. Rowan had stopped his county-owned 1986 Ford Tempo on Littlestown Pike in preparation for making a left turn onto Old Meadow Branch Road when a 1995 Ford Ranger pickup truck driven by Kathleen M. Whitman of Clinton, Prince George's County, hit the victim's car in the right rear.

Police said the car then was struck by a southbound 1993 Buick Skylark driven by Mark D. Boyle, 31 of Potomac, Montgomery County.

Mr. Boyle was taken to the Carroll County General Hospital and released after treatment.
