A sport in need

Ripken was asked whether he was a savior for baseball in a year the sport needed a boost, following the long players' strike.

"I won't allow myself to think baseball needs any one person," he said. "I've heard that a lot during the course of the season. This was an opportunity to express how good baseball can be. I just happened to be the person sitting here at the time when people are looking to cling onto something positive. I might've been the benefactor of it more than I would've in other years. I don't look at myself as a savior by any means."
