September 08, 1995

Britt Coffin of the Village of Wilde Lake has qualified for the Gatorade Ironman Triathlon World Championship on Oct. 7 at Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

Ms. Coffin, 27, competed on the USA National Team in 1993 and Academic All-American Women's Swiming Team in 1990.

Nearly 20,000 triathletes from more than 50 countries annually attempt to qualify for the triathlon's most prestigious event that began in 1978. The event features a 2.4-mile ocean swim, 112-mile bike race and 26.2-mile run to be completed in 17 hours.

Training requires 18 to 24 hours per week for six to eight months to develop stamina and endurance for the event.

The race is limited to 1,500 contestants. Top men's and women's finishers receive more than $25,000 each.
