Organizers postpone Home Design Expo

Organizers of the planned Baltimore Home Design Expo scheduled for next month have postponed the show until next year because they couldn't sign up enough exhibitors.

Many companies did not have enough time to prepare and budget for the show, Expo organizers said in a letter sent to businesses yesterday.

"It's definitely not dead," Baltimore architect Bruce Finkelstein said in an interview. But no new date has been set, he added.

Since launching its promotional campaign in July, the organizers had received "applications, verbal commitments and continued consideration for booths from nearly 200 potential exhibitors. However, as of today, we have received signed contracts for less than 100 booths from fewer than 70 exhibitors," the letter said.

Show organizers had hoped the Oct. 13-16 event at the Baltimore Armory could draw 45,000 visitors. The Baltimore Sun Co. was co-sponsoring the Expo, which was intended to feature 10 categories of exhibitors, ranging from kitchen and bath firms to flooring specialists.

The letter, sent by Mr. Finkelstein and architect Craig L. Stewart of Ellicott City, said that show organizers were trying to create an annual event in Baltimore that would serve as "the premiere professional showcase for the services and products available to homeowners with serious projects.

"However, we have always represented and conceived of this effort as a cooperative event based solely on professionalism," the letter continued, "and do not want to jeopardize its long-term potential for merely commercial considerations."

In the interview, Mr. Finkelstein said there was "no participation from the interior design community," and a number of major categories had few exhibitors signed up.
