Ryder faces Teamsters strike

About 5,000 Teamsters prepared to strike the nation's largest car hauling company today, forcing automakers to plan other ways to ship new cars and trucks to distribution centers and dealers.

The union contends Ryder and other car haulers have violated federal labor laws by refusing to share economic and operations information in negotiations for a new national contract. The old one expired in May. Bargainers for 12,000 Teamsters truck drivers and dockworkers have been meeting intermittently since January with representatives of the companies. Talks broke off Friday with no further meetings scheduled.

Dundalk Marine Terminal could see picketing because a Ryder subsidiary, Commercial Carriers Inc., employs Teamsters drivers to handle imported cars at the port.
