Loyola women top Towson

Trica Witte (Oakland Mills) scored on a rebound off a shot by Denise Serafin 10:44 into the game to lead Loyola to a 1-0 victory over Towson State yesterday in a women's soccer game.

The win marked the third year in a row that Loyola (2-1) has beaten Towson State (0-1) by a 1-0 score.

* St. Mary's 4, Chowan 0: Kelly Miller scored two goals, leading St. Mary's (2-0) past visiting Chowan.

* Western Maryland 9, Villa Julie 1: Eight players scored for Western Maryland (1-0) in its season-opening win over visiting Villa Julie (0-1).

Men

* St. Mary's 4, Chowan 1: John McNanus scored two goals, leading host St. Mary's (1-2) past Chowan. Pete Sweigard had two assists for St. Mary's.

* Johns Hopkins 6, Marymount 0: Eric West scored two goals, leading host Johns Hopkins (1-0) past Marymount (0-2).

Field hockey

* Towson State 5, La Salle 0: Beth Chapman set a single-game record with three assists and added a goal to lead Towson State past La Salle (0-2). Amy Shaw scored two goals for Towson, and Amy Gorecki and Lisa McCullen each added a goal.
